Smyths
Apple Orchard is a family- run business that has
its beginning in the mid-1800s
situated
at historical Dundela, where two monuments
commemorate John McIntosh, who discovered an
apple tree in his back yard. Through careful
attendance and grafting by his son, Allen, the
native apple grew in popularity and was
appropriately named the McIntosh Red. |
| McIntosh orchards
throughout the world originated from this single
tree. |
Sam Smyth was a
contemporary of Allen McIntosh with the
development of a nursery; thus was the
beginning of the Smyths Orchard.
Smyths Orchard has grown to now
include 120 acres with over thirty
thousand trees with seven cold storages
in order to keep the apples as fresh and
crisp as possible for the wholesale and
retail market which runs from August 1st
to mid April. |
