Welcome
to
St. Pauls Episcopal Church
St. Pauls Episcopal
Church in Waddington, New York is the oldest
church building still in existence in St.
Lawrence County, and the parish is one of the
oldest north of the Mohawk River Valley.
Construction began in 1816,
was completed in 1818 at a cost of $8,000, and
was consecrated in August 1818. It is a fine
example Georgian architecture. David Ogden
donated the church lot. |

The tower was not
erected until 1827, when Joshua
Waddington gave money for that purpose.
The pipe organ, located in the balcony,
is reputed to be one of only 10 left in
existence today. Dated 1858, was
literally Danced into the
church. |

The stained glass
windows are of Tiffany design, installed
in 1880, and although badly in need of
repair, still project a majesty and
beauty second to none.
The Chancel window (Dove and Chalice
above the altar) is a faithful copy of St.
Pauls Chapel in New York City. |

A bell was one of
the first gifts received by the new
parish, and was a gift of the Honorable
John Ogilive. The present bell is the
churchs third.
The pews were, at one time, sold, rented
or auctioned. This practice ended in 1878,
when the church went to the free pew
system. Each pew originally had doors, |
| but these
were removed to allow for better heat
circulation. |

The
church was first lighted by candles. Kerosene
lamps were then used until about 1900, when the
old light fixtures were wired for electricity.
Mass is conducted every Sunday at 10:00AM, with
Father Craig Hacker officiating. |
